Calendar boys: East end pensioners get their kit off to save pubs

A group of East London pensioners have come up with a novel way of ending pub closures by launching a tongue in cheek nude calendar to raise awareness about disappearing pubs.

The OAP Geezers club of Bow is an Age UK supported men’s social group and the calendar shows each member playing traditional pub games like pool, cribbage and shove ha’penny.

Although the calendar is guaranteed to raise a smile, there is a serious message behind it with the Geezers aiming to highlight the increasing isolation of elderly people as more pubs-a traditional meeting place-close their doors.

Member Ray Gibson told Saga magazine: “Time was when you know everybody but that’s all changed. The pubs have all been turned into posh flats.”

The Geezers have teamed up with artist Louise Gridley to draw attention to the loss of community heritage and social integration.

Any proceeds from the calendar sales will be re-invested in community projects to support the elderly.
