Team Margot launches international stem cell and bone marrow awareness day

Team Margot Foundation, a charity started in the memory of Margot Martini, has launched an international stem cell and bone marrow awareness day.

The day is designed to promote greater awareness of the need for more potential stem cell donors to join the UK and worldwide registries, particularly among people of mixed race, which are under-represented.

The day marks the second anniversary of toddler Margot being diagnosed with blood cancer. She sadly died in October last year.

The foundation has already received generous support from across the licensed trade and co-founder, Margot’s father Yaser Martini, hopes that industry will once again join the team in raising awareness on this special day, in any way they can or see fit.

“It’s a very personal day for us, but by reaching out to others to help make this awareness day a success, it’s our hope that as a collective, we can assist others, that right now, don’t even know they need a stem cell or bone marrow donor. If you think about it, that’s a very powerful thing and it could be you, or a loved one.

“We hope that people adopt the spirit of the day and help share the message that not nearly enough of us have registered as potential donors. The more donors we can encourage, the more lives we’ll save, it’s as simple as that.”

The awareness day is another step towards achieving Team Margot Foundation’s initial goal of having 2.5 million people on the UK stem cell register. Blood cancer is in the top 10 most common causes of cancer death in the UK and the rest of the world.

An appeal at the Publican Awards in 2014 raised almost £14,000 which ensured about 350 new stem cell donors were added to the register.
