Birmingham the Rainbow keeps licences by searching staff for weapons
A Birmingham nightclub has clung on to its licence by offering to search its own staff for weapons.

West Midlands police called for an expedited review in to the Rainbow nightclub’s licence after door staff assaulted club-goers earlier this year.

All door staff must now be searched before they start their shift at the club.

The licensing subcommittee said the steps were necessary to deal with shortcomings in the club’s management and to deal with the strong chance of serious crime or disorder.

Rainbow management stressed that all staff involved in the incident had been fired, a new security company had been hired and existing staff would attend a mandatory refresher course in conflict management.

Andrew Potts, on behalf of Rainbow Venues, said: “The venue fully accepts that prior to this unfortunate incident complacency had set in.

“In a very short space of time they have produced a document, which in my opinion, covers everything that you required.

“A number of external people have been brought in to get this ship back on an even keel. This was a maverick event that nobody could have foreseen. It’s a complete one-off.

The Publican’s Morning Advertiser’s legal specialist Poppleston Allen said they had not seen a similar condition put on a license before.
