Charity pub wheelie bin race proves a hit

The annual Wheelie Bin Race at the Three Horseshoes pub in Hernhill, near Faversham, has this year raised £3,128 for charity.

Launched at the Shepherd Neame pub more than a decade ago, the annual event sees teams of four racing elaborately decorated bins through the Kent village.

A total of 13 teams took part in this year’s event on 8 August. Four members of Three Horseshoes staff won the prize for making it back to the pub in the fastest time; the ‘Fat Ballerinas’ were named Best Dressed; and the team who had come as ‘Buster’s Bar’ in honour of licensee Buster McDonnell won the award for Best Bin.

The race was followed by an afternoon and evening of events at the Three Horseshoes, including live music from the Leigh Highwood Band, a barbecue, auction and raffle.

McDonnell said: "The sun shone, we had a great number of teams, and a massive turnout of spectators. We would like to thank everyone who supported the event and gave so generously. We will be giving the money to Pilgrims Hospices in Canterbury."
