London’s first tea pub beat its crowdfunding target by a massive £49,000, with one investor contributing £35,450.

The concept, named Brew, will ‘have the feel of a pub’ but will serve pots of tea instead of pints, alongside tea cocktails and light food. Founder Alex Holland says Brew ‘treats tea like a serious drink.’ There were over 300 investments in the business, reaching a total of £229,330.

Holland told Big Hospitality: “Brew speaks to something in our culture that’s been lost, and we’re finding a new way to value it. If you don’t reinterpret traditions they just end up being irrelevant and new things take over-like coffee.

“What does it say about Britain, which is a nation defined by tea drinking, when we accept the worst possible quality as normal? Tea is so much more than a drink; it’s a part of how we define ourselves in this country.”

The concept has attracted a high calibre team, with Franco Manca founder Giuseppe Mascoli and Cinnamon Club founder Iqbal Wahhab already on board.

Holland has big ambitions for the concept, and aims to open ten pubs in London in four years.

The extra £49,000 will be used to accelerate the launch of a second Brew site.
