Oxfordshire-based pub operator Brakspear has rewarded tenants at five of its pubs in its annual awards.

Awards were given for Best Customer Service Pub, Best Entertainment Pub, Best Food Pub, Best Kept Cellar and Heart of the Community, as measured by mystery customer visits, TripAdvisor reports and overall sales growth.

Chief executive Tom Davies said: “Winning a Brakspear Hospitality Award is no small achievement, and the tenants of all five pubs taking honours today should be extremely proud of their success. The areas we rewarded, from food to community involvement, are ones that many of our pubs do well, so choosing the best was a tough task.

“It was particularly pleasing to see that some of today’s winners have been in their pubs for only one or two years, and shows what can be achieved by the right tenant with the right approach. We hope all our winners enjoy spending their well-deserved reward and look forward to recognising more talented tenants in the future.”

The winners are:

  • Best Customer Service Pub: Mark & Sandra Duggan, Chequers at Berrick Salome, Oxfordshire
  • Best Entertainment Pub: Antosh Samek, Clayton’s Marlow, Buckinghamshire
  • Best Food Pub: James Bainbridge & Tom Bridges, Tilbury, Datchworth, Hertfordshire
  • Heart of the Community: Lee Cobb & Tracy Green, Jolly Millers, Bexleyheath, Kent
  • Best Kept Cellar: Iain Mountain, Jolly Brickmakers, Redhill, Surrey

The winners received a plaque and a prize of either £1,000 in cash, or £2,000 to invest in their business, while the winner of the Best Kept Cellar was rewarded with their own ‘house ale’ with a pump clip designed with their involvement, and free Cask Marque membership for one year.
