How children's drawings can make money in your pub

Fun drawing competition is as ideal holiday-based activity for pubs.

Great Griffin Picture Competition

The Idea:

The annual fun drawing competition for children during the Easter break themed around the pub. This year the children decorated a poster of the pubs’ Griffin sign.

How it works:

Children were encouraged to draw their own Griffin or decorate a pre-printed poster. This meant children of all levels of ability could enter into the fun. Entry forms were available throughout the Easter weekend and all entries are compiled into a gallery on the website. Craft kit prizes are given to age group winners while all children that enter receive a small gift.

Marketing:

The competition was promoted through the website, social media and posters displayed in the pub. The team actively encouraged visiting families to take part, offering copies of the entry forms and craft materials to use.

Be prepared:  Design an entry form, make sure there are lots of copies and plenty of colouring and craft accessories available, advised licensee Gilly Ryan.

Pay off: Showcased the child-friendly aspects of the business, promoting a personalised welcome for the younger members of the family.

Key benefits:

On Bank Holiday weekend, happy, occupied children meant families stayed longer. Entry forms included the parent's email contact details, allowing for data capture and to keep in contact regarding future events.

Advice:

Engage with youngsters on the day and get to know the children of regular customers.  If the children are happy then so are mum and dad. Make sure that all children's games and activities are complete and in tip-top condition.

Best Outcome:

Small craft kits for cards and pictures are now being made available for children. This has been very popular and resulted in great relationships with visiting families.
