Cock and Seaman owner hits back at critics of pub's risque new name

The owner of a pub which has been criticised on social media for its risque new name has told people not to forget that “pubs are meant to be fun places”.

Ed Atkinson, who runs the 13-strong pub company At Will Pubs with partner Fred Williams, has been criticised by locals who did not approve of the former Doric pubs at Seaforth, Merseyside being given the name the “Cock and Seaman”.

The company calls a number of its other pubs “Cock” with sites including The Cock and Pullet, Oxton on the Wirral and The Cock in Swine in Swinton.

Atkinson said: “Both Fred and I are Liverpool lads, and share the scouse sense of humour. However this is not to say that we don't take our pubs seriously. We have a passion for good pubs, quality local cask ales, and all that makes British pubs great.”

The renamed pub has received significant investment from the company and Atkinson said that the venue will stock local ales from Liverpool Organic Brewery and is employing local management and staff.

Atkinson added: “Let's not forget, pubs are meant to be fun places to be in. Scousers are known for our sense of humour. We hope The Cock and Seaman will be embraced and enjoyed by all who sail in her!”

He said the pubco planned to reach 25 pubs over the next two years.
