ETM Group to open Suffolk country pub

ETM Group, the London-based gastropub operator led by Tom and Ed Martin, is opening its first country pub at Preston St Mary in Suffolk called the Six Bells this spring, M&C Report has learnt.

The pub, which has been in the Martin family for a while but let to tenants, has been underperforming under its tenancy and suffered with underinvestment.

Ed Martin told M&C: “We decided now is the time to step in and spread our wings a little bit and reenergise it and try our hand outside of London.”

The pub will be run by John Tremayne who has worked at ETM Group for eight years as the head chef at both the White Swan and the Gun.

The Six Bells is currently being refurbished ahead of re-opening in a month when it will have 40 covers inside the pub and an extensive four acre garden that will be developed to be used in the summer months.

Martin told M&C ETM has taken over the running of the Six Bells to “take a pocket gem and give it wings to let it take off”.

Meanwhile in London, Martin said the most recent opening by ETM – the Ealing Park Tavern – is trading “phenomenally well” and has been well received by the community. “We introduced a great new design with a slightly different direction that is far exceeding our projected numbers.”

The group is now looking at a mix of central London and suburban sites to continue expanding

“We are always opening new sites so we’ve bene looking across London but having done Ealing and seeing how well it works makes us consider places we would not have previously thought of.”
