Carlsberg adds flavour to Somersby cider

More than two years after its launch, Carlsberg is adding flavoured ciders to its Somersby brand.

Two fruit flavours ciders were unveiled today, cranberry and blackberry, alongside Apple Burst, a sweeter version of the original Somersby variant.

There are also plans for a £7m marketing campaign to boost the brand in the next few months.

“Cider in the UK is growing faster than the total alcohol category and fruit-flavoured cider is experiencing 22% year-on-year growth (Nielsen and CGA),” said director of brand and insight at Carlsberg UK, David Scott.

“We know there is a strong consumer desire for great-tasting fruit flavoured ciders and we’re confident that our three new flavours will attract more consumers to the category.”

The new ciders, all of which have been designed to be served over ice, will be available from next month in 500ml bottles.

Tasting notes:

  • Somersby Apple Burst is a refreshing apple cider at 4.5% ABV with a sweeter flavour profile than Somersby Original
  • Somersby Cranberry offers a delicious, slightly sharp cranberry taste and an ABV of 4%
  • Somersby Blackberry is a fruity, refreshing cider with a 4% ABV and a mild-yet-tangy taste offering a hint of blackberry.

Last week the company announced it was bringing back its “Probably the best…” slogan in a new £12m campaign for Carlsberg.
