JD Wetherspoon is to open its first pub in the Republic of Ireland – but has admitted it will not be serving the nation’s most popular drink, Guinness.

The managed pub operator will open its latest pub in Blackrock next Tuesday (8 July) after a €2.38m refit.

However, the Three Tun Tavern, on the site of the former Tonic Bar, will not feature Guinness on the menu.

According to the Irish Times Wetherspoon’s decided the price point sought by Diageo was too high. It has decided to off Beamish and Murphy’s stout instead.

A Diageo spokesman it remains competitive with its pricing in Ireland and declined to comment further.

The opening of the pub, which revives the name of an 18th century tavern, will create 60 jobs.

Manager John Hartigan said: “Myself and my team are looking forward to welcoming customers into the pub and we are confident that it will be a great addition to the Blackrock community.”
