An unusual World Cup bet has left customers at a Northamptonshire pub with a good reason to keep watching even after England’s early exit.

John Whelan, a regular at the George in Tiffield, is watching the tournament in Brazil waving a specially designed St George’s flag with the pub’s name and postcode stitched onto it at every one of the six games he has tickets for.

Landlord Russell Proctor has offered a free pint to any customer who while watching a match in the pub spots John and his flag. As well as a complimentary tipple for the sharp-eyed drinker, Russell has also agreed to give John a Firkin of locally produced Tiffield Thunderbolt if the challenge comes off.

Proctor said that on a normal night he would expect around 30-40 customers but with his bet on the go he has around a 100 coming and looking at the match but also looking for a flag in amongst thousands of supporters.

With four matches down the next chance to spot John is tomorrow night when the USA take on Germany.
