David Cameron has welcomed the growth of community pubs and backed a project to bring a Bristol local back to life.

During Prime Minister’s Questions today Charlotte Leslie, Conservative MP for Bristol North West, asked Cameron to comment on the campaign to re-open the Lamplighters in Shirehampton, which has been derelict for five years.

She said: “We are in the midst of a volunteering week of action to renovate the historic Lamplighters Pub, which was closed under Enterprise Inns in 2009 but now re-opening thanks to the determination of local residents and new owners Kathie and Dominic Gundry-White. Will he welcome all the jobs, community spirit and real ale that will bring?”

Cameron replied: “I’m delighted to welcome that real ale and of course recommend that they take advantage of the 1p (beer duty) cut, not just in this budget but in the previous one.

“I think we are seeing growth in terms of community pubs and that is all to the good. It’s welcome of course that we introduced the Community Right to Bid, which has enabled a number of these communities to take hold of these facilities and operate them for the use of the public.”
