ALMR member donations fund LTC autism school kitchen
More than £20,000 given by Association of Licensed Retailers members has been used to create an ‘independent living area’ kitchen at the LVS Hassocks School in West Sussex to help the teenagers build independent living skills and social interaction.
The kitchen is currently used 16 to 19 year olds for cooking and eating with fellow students, who are encouraged to shop for, plan and budget their own meals.
Resident pupil Callum McCree, 16, said: “Now that we have a kitchen it gives our residents a sense of purpose in the evenings.
“They are up cooking and preparing meals with the room to be creative and explore their culinary abilities.
“We are that much closer to the ideal level of independence with the means to self-sustain; I cannot understate the benefits.”
'Significant difference'
Licensed Trade Charity director of marketing Liz Gaffer added: “The support from ALMR members every year means a great deal to us.
“It allows us to make a significant difference in people’s lives, like giving youngsters with autism a kitchen for building their independent living skills, or paying for food parcels for retired licensees struggling financially.
“It’s also a clear sign that members of this industry body support the work of their own charity. We are very proud to have this support.”
ALMR Chief Executive David McHattie added: “Once again the ALMR members have shown their kindness and dedication to supporting worthy causes.
“We are immensely pleased to give our continued support to the Licensed Trade Charity and to show that this industry invests in its people and provides fantastic opportunities.”
