Zonal Retail Data Systems, the Edinburgh-based leading EPoS provider to the hospitality industry, won Family Business of the Year at this year’s Scottish Business Awards, presented at a ceremony in front of industry leaders including Sir Richard Branson and Michelle Mone.

Stuart McLean, chief executive of Zonal, says: “This award is a huge step forward for us and what we’ve been working towards for the past 35 years. At Zonal we take our customers’ business very seriously and strive to go above and beyond to ensure their success. We’re incredibly proud of the way Zonal has developed and, while consistently developing new technology to help our customers, we’re excited about what the future holds for us.”

EPos system

Zonal’s first EPoS system was developed by Ralph McLean as a way of monitoring sales, stock and wastage in the family-owned hotel. In 1979, an employee of famed brewer Scottish & Newcastle liked what he saw and rolled out the system across the company’s pub estate. Today, Zonal’s software is used by more than 6,000 businesses and remains true to its roots - the family owns 100% of the share capital with five family members on the board - and also supports other family businesses as an active member of the Institute for Family Business.

The ceremony, sponsored by Virgin Money, was held at The Edinburgh International Conference Centre and hosted by internationally acclaimed comedian Michael McIntyre. Attended annually by more than 1,900 key industry figures, the evening recognises excellence in Scottish business and encourages entrepreneurialism in future generations. This year, Sir Richard Branson also took part in an open Q&A session focusing on social and responsible business behaviour.
