Staff at Charles Wells pubs are celebrating after smashing their fundraising target and pledging enough £53,000 to Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Bedford-based company teamed up with Macmillan in 2012 and pledged to raise enough money to fund a Macmillan nurse for a whole year.  Since then pubs across the South East and their customers have worked hard to raise more than £41,000 for the cancer support charity with quiz nights, fun days and fundraising challenges, including one pub manager who shaved their head.

The money raised was topped up by Charles Wells' Eagle Aid community chest scheme, and the company also donated 10p from each pint of Eagle sold in May last year.

Peter Wells, managing director at Charles Wells Pub Company said: “From undertaking gruelling running, walking and cycling challenges to coming together to support community events- the effort and enthusiasm from our pubs, their customers and the Charles Wells Pub Company team to help support Macmillan has been phenomenal.

"Together they have helped raise more than enough money to fund a Macmillan nurse for a year to help their invaluable work continue.  This is an incredible achievement to share and we hope we can raise even more money for Macmillan in the coming year."
