Porter takes CAMRA's top winter beer award for second year running

Dunham Porter has been announced the Campaign for Real Ale's Champion Winter Beer of Britain.

Dunham Massey Brewery's dark beer took the top spot at the awards following a presentation at the brewery's Costello's Bar in Stockton Heath.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, head brewer and owner of Dunham Massey Brewery John Costello said: "As soon as we brewed this beer we knew it was good and it's not changed one bit from the first test batch we did. To win this award is fantastic and we're just glad that everybody else likes this beer too, as we are really proud of it."

The beer is made from all British ingredients including roasted malt and English grown hops.

Colin Valentine, CAMRA’s national chairman, presented the award.

He said: "CAMRA are very keen to preserve the classic British styles such as Porter which were in recent history on the brink of dying out altogether despite the fact it was once one of the most popular drinks in Britain. Dunham Porter is a fantastic beer that very well represents this wonderful style. Dark, extremely flavoursome, yet actually very drinkable thanks to its smooth body and great balance - An excellent beer I would recommend anyone gives a try – and a very worthwhile winner of this much-coveted award.”

Winners from the competition will now go forward to be judged in the Champion Beer of Britain competition at the Great British Beer Festival 2014, which will be held at the London Olympia Exhibition centre from 12 to 16 August.

Last year’s winner of the Champion Winter Beer of Britain Award was Elland Brewery’s 1872 Porter, a beer that first won in the winter beer competition
