JD Wetherspoon wins 'most nutritious breakfast' award

JD Wetherspoon’s breakfast has been named the most nutritious of those served across UK hospitality.

A panel of nutritionists deemed it the best of all pubs, restaurants and coffee outlets in Men’s Health magazine’s Eat Like A Man restaurant awards 2014.

The judges tried three JDW breakfast items: cooked breakfast; toast and preserves; and yogurt and fruit with deductions based on protein quality, fat content, carb sources, salt content, sugar content, nutrition density and price.

"This may come as a surprise (and a cause celebre for juice dieters) the UK’s favourite cheap and cheerful pub chain offers the most nutritious early-bird start," said a judges’ statement.

"The cooked breakfast can be altered so you can get balanced proteins and healthy fats. Its award-winning sausages have less salt and fat than many a supermarket banger and the eggs are British Lion approved, which guarantees safety and quality.

"Poppy seed bread gives you more fibre and less sugar than your average greasy spoon. And as low calorie options, there’s porridge or fruit with Greek yoghurt. Eggs with wholegrain toast, mushrooms and tomatoes is a balanced option.

"It’s energy dense, high in protein and fibre. Plus the mushrooms are rich in immune-boosting Vitamin D."

JDW’s senior food development manager, Jameson Robinson, said: "This is a wonderful accolade for the company and its pubs and more importantly it highlights the quality of our breakfasts, the range of products that are available and their nutritional values."
