Cornish cider maker launches salted apple energy drink

Salted caramel has taken the confectionery world by storm, and cider-maker Healey’s is hoping salted apple juice will have a similar effect on the energy drink sector.

The Cornish company has launched Cornish Bite an energy drink made from caffeine, 25% apple juice and sea salt harvested off the Cornish coast.

The company claims the drink is isotonic, so its glucose levels are in keeping with the body’s natural blood sugar levels, which aids recovery from exercise, and has the same strength as a single shot of espresso coffee.

“We are really excited to launch Cornish Bite which is very different to anything that’s currently available on the market,” said Joe Healey, commercial director.

“It was important to us that the drink still came with the authentic Healey’s taste, which is why Cornish Bite contains a far higher percentage of fruit juice than mass market energy drinks.”

The company says the salt is to ensure the drink is packed full of minerals, as Cornish sea salt is relatively low in sodium, and high in the naturally-occurring minerals that help maintain a healthy balance of electrolytes in the body.

“Cornish Bite boosts your body’s levels while packing a serious flavour punch - it’s Cornwall in a can,” Healey added.

Last winter Healey’s launched a mulled version of its Rattler cider brand for the winter months, which it positioned as a “delicious alternative to wine.”
