Prime Minister intervenes after licensee received eviction notice from Enterprise Inns
Simon Moore, of the Chequers Inn, in Witney, Oxfordshire, was due to vacate the property on 8 May, but has now been granted a ‘stay of execution’ until 4 June.
It came after Moore contacted Cameron, who is his local MP, about the situation. The PM’s constituency office told the Publican’s Morning Advertiser: “David has asked that the family ‘keeps him in the loop with any developments’ so that he can be on hand to help out further as their MP should they need it.”
Moore welcomed the move by Cameron and said it will be better than having to stay in a Travelodge 26 miles away from his eight-year-old son’s school.
However, he added that he will never return to the pub trade unless “something changes drastically".
“I’m going to go full-time as a taxi driver,” he said.
“I have been offering the service at the end of the night to customers. It’s the perfect opportunity to get some money in.
“It has probably brought in more money than the pub has.”
He added: “I’ve been here for 12 years, fully-tied.
“We’ve had some good times but nothing lasts forever. I won’t come back into the trade unless something changes drastically in this country.”
Moore accused Enterprise of not allowing him to sell Hobgoblin beer, even though the Wychwood Brewery is just 200 metres from the pub.
He added that in June 2011, he was forced to close the garden area by 11pm after a noise complaint. This meant that he could no longer sell burgers through a hatch in the garden, which, he claims, has cost him £50,000.
His pending eviction led to a demonstration outside the pub by trade union GMB, which believes that Moore was being charged too much rent with a full tie.
An Enterprise spokesman said: “We have worked very hard to support and assist the publican who found the running of the Chequers Inn unsustainable. We will now be looking to recruit new publicans for the Chequers Inn.”
