Elland Brewery’s 1872 Porter awarded CAMRA’s Winter Champion Beer of Britain

Elland Brewery’s 1872 Porter has been awarded CAMRA’s Winter Champion Beer of Britain Award (CWBOB) for the second time in three years.

The annual competition judges the best old ales, strong milds, porters, stouts and barley wines that British breweries have to offer.

Elland Brewery owner Mark Smith said: “We are now privileged to be in elite company with Nethergate Old Growler and Robinson's Old Tom as the only double winners of the CWBOB award. It really is a great honour for us.

“It wouldn't have been possible without CAMRA organising and promoting these events, all the judges who have appreciated the beer, all the landlords who have bought and served it, and finally, all the people who have drunk and enjoyed it. Thank you one and all!”

The brewery describes the 1872 Porter as having an old port nose, with coffee and bitter chocolate flavours on the palate. According to CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, it is:  “Creamy and soft, with a satisfying aftertaste of bittersweet roast and malt.”

CAMRA director Nik Antona feels the 1872 Porter shows that real ale is as popular as ever.
