St Austell recognises its pubs at annual awards ceremony

St Austell Brewery has paid tribute to its pubs with 20 awards given out to reward team and individual achievements within the Cornwall-based brewery’s 170-strong estate.

The brewery’s annual awards ceremony was hosted at the Great Western Hotel in Newquay and brought together more than 300 St Austell Brewery tenants, managers, industry sponsors and staff from across the region.

Ed and Barbara May, managers of the Great Western Hotel won the Managers of the Year award in recognition of the hotel’s 8% increase in accommodation sales in 2012 as well as positive customer feedback.

The Tenants of the Year award was given to John Milan, who runs three of St Austell Brewery’s pubs including the Pandora Inn in Restronguet.

Adam Luck, St Austell Brewery’s Estate Director, said: “2012 was a particularly exciting year for the Brewery with the acquisition of five new pubs, including one in Bristol, and the opening of a new cask racking facility on site to increase capacity, so it was great to reflect on all the year achieved for both individuals and teams.

The other awards were as follows:

  • Catering Excellence Business of the Year​ - Harbour Inn, Porthleven (managed); Queens Hotel, St Ives (tenanted)
  • Cask Ale Pub of the Year​  - Old Custom House, Padstow (managed); Buccaneer Inn, Torquay (tenanted)
  • Customer Service Pub of the Year​ - Pedn-Olva Hotel, St Ives
  • Community Pub of the Year/ Charitable Trust Champion​ - King’s Arms, Luxulyan
  • Best Turnaround​ - The Ship, Plymouth (managed); New Inn, Park Bottom (tenanted)
  • New Tenant of the Yea​r - Pete Woodham, Rolle Quay Inn, Barnstaple
  • Marketing and Innovation Business of the Yea​r - Central Inn, Newquay (managed); White Horse Inn, Launceston (tenanted)
  • Quality In Tourism Accommodation​ - County Arms, Truro (managed); St Agnes Hotel, Truro (tenanted)
  • Training Award​ - Old Market House, Brixham and Alan & Sally Jones, multiple tenants
  • Special directors’ awards​ - Ollie Smallwood & Tamsin Smith (the Shipwrights, Padstow) and Ashley Sharp & Will Titcombe (the Port William, Trebarwith Strand)
  • Pub Floral Display of the Year​ - Earl of St Vincent, Egloshayle
  • Wine House of the Year​ - Polgooth Inn, Polgooth
