A pub in Kent raised £250 after introducing a swearbox for a week to raise money for a charity abseil set to take place this weekend.

Georgina Paxton of the Divers Arms in Herne Bay said she was looking for another way to raise money for charity, instead of the usual raffles or tournaments.

Paxton said she fined customers 50p per expletive. However, if punters were coming in for an evening, they could donate £5 to swear as much as they like. Regulars were given the option to pay £30 for the week.

The money will go to local charity Special Needs Advisory Activity and Projects and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Paxton said: “There is a group of six of us that are taking part in an abseil on Saturday as part of a local two-week festival, and we each needed to raise some money for it. But as three of us work at the pub, we see the same people everyday, so we needed to think of another way to raise money.”
