Bedford pub wrongly named in Euro 2012 football riot reports

A Bedford pub inadvertedly became the subject of unwelcome press attention earlier today after news reports, including on the BBC and the Sun’s websites, said it had been targeted by England football fans following last night’s defeat to Italy.

Disgruntled supporters were said to have descended upon the pub where it is believed a number of Italian supporters had watched the game.

However, the BBC had to change the story it had initially published when it emerged that The Embankment referred to in police reports was not actually the pub, but the name of the long road upon which it is located.

A number of arrests were made following disorder between fans at the far end of the road but a manager at the pub told the PMA about the BBC’s mistake.

He added that the initial report was unwelcome because the pub attracts a lot of international customers who may have been put off upon reading the story in its original form.
