Pubs, bars and restaurants in Nottingham city centre are getting an extra boost to pull in the punters as street ambassadors provide recommendations to tourists.

The street ambassadors have been hired by Nottingham’s Business Improvement District (BID) to welcome visitors to the city and help tourists find the type of venue they want. They will also provide information on meal deals or drink offers.

“It’s a warm, friendly welcome to the city — a bit like having a close friend on hand to recommend where to visit,” said Sylvia Oates, chief executive at Nottingham Leisure BID. “So they can ask a street ambassador for a pub that does real ale or does a good wine list, for example.

“But this is also a really good way of businesses linking — we had a street event last week and some premises provided mulled wine.”

Licensee Danny Williams of the Pit & Pendulum believes the scheme is an excellent opportunity for Nottingham premises.

“It will definitely help pubs and help customers find the right one for their needs,” he said.

“In the long run, it may enhance trade but it’s hard to measure right now.

Quite a few pubs already work together to provide a good experience; this will further enhance that.”

The British Beer & Pub Association’s Midlands secretary Richard Matthews said: “This will put pubs in a good position — people coming to Nottingham looking for a good time in a safe environment will be directed to those sites. It will help generate a better atmosphere in the city and help trade for the pubs.”

The scheme is run in collaboration with the Nottingham Retail BID, where ambassadors will direct them to specific retail outlets.

Businesses in the area have been asked to email Nottingham BID at info@wearenottingham.co.uk to provide information on any deals whilst the scheme gains momentum.
