A Yorkshire pub has reclaimed the record for the UK for serving the world's largest fish and chips with the dish weighing in at over 100lbs.
Chefs at the Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton in the Yorkshire Dales National Park dished up a 40lb fillet of prime halibut in its Black Sheep beer batter, 60lbs of handcut chips and a vat of mushy peas. The record is for the weight of the dish.
The fish and chips were prepared in a custom made giant pan and more than four gallons of batter were used to coat the fillet.
The record has been officially verified by Guinness World Records and the dish was shared amongst villagers at the American Independence Day weekend event, with donations going to Help the Heroes.
Pub owner David Moss has turned the Heifer into an award winning fish restaurant since buying it five years ago.
"The Heifer has always been renowned for quality fish and chips, so it seemed fitting to try to bring back the world record to England and Yorkshire," he said.
"Everything ran more or less to plan and we were delighted to break the record. I'd like to thank all the staff at the Heifer for their sterling efforts and for all the people who supported us. The fish and chips tasted great but I think for now we will stick to serving more normal size fillets."
The record was previously held by the Black Rose Restaurant in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, with 44lbs of chips and 34lbs of fish.
