JD Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin, has retained his position as the most influential person in the pub trade.

Martin's company has continued to grow and its success, coupled with his standing as the industry's premier spokesman and most recognisable figure, has kept him ahead of his peers in the Publican's Morning Advertiser's Top 50 Most Influential People in the Pub Industry List.

Wetherspoon opened its 800th pub this year and hopes to double the size of its estate going forward.

Sales have remained strong, proving that Wetherspoon's competitive pricing policies and unbeatable food deals and offers are as relevant today as ever.

Martin has regularly challenged the Government over excessive red tape and taxation policies, and is a firm believer that policy and its implementation is firmly anti-pub.

He has been particularly critical of test-purchasing with its enforced regime of excessive ID-checking.

He was also the first UK member of Jacque Borel's VAT Club, which aims to convince Government of the benefits of reducing VAT in the hospitality sector.

Wetherspoon opened 47 pubs last year and 50-plus are expected to follow this year.
