Warwickshire-based brewer Purity is to triple its capacity after planning for a new 5,000 square foot brewhouse was approved.

The new brewhouse will make use of empty barns at the existing brewery farm site and will increase capcaity to around 400 barrels a week — the equivalent of 5.9m pints a year.

The expansion comes on the back of a 53% increase in sales in its most recent financial year. Sales rose to £2,010,000 with net profit up by 50%. In five years, it has grown to supply over 500 pubs.

The new brewhouse will return all waste water to the river after being cleaned and use heat exchange technology, which will help to slash energy use by up to 30%.

"Purity has had a fantastic year building our brand by supporting local events such as the Birmingham Comedy festival and Moseley Folk Festival," said managing director Paul Halsey.

"Add to this our growth in net profit by 50% over the last year, a growing customer base of over 500 pubs and the planning application being grant — well, it's safe to say the team and I will be having a pint to celebrate."

Purity submitted its planning application in September 2010 and was supported by MP for Stratford Upon Avon Nadhim Zahawi.

"Purity is a top-class company," said Zahawi. "The new brewery signals a major step forward in its growth, and that's a tremendous development for the rural economy locally.

"I've always been confident that the rural economy can pick itself up after the terrible battering it's suffered in recent years — and Purity's plans demonstrate convincingly that with the right entrepreneurial drive, determination and commitment rural areas will fight back successfully."
