Fire closes Wetherspoon flagship green pub
A serious fire has closed JD Wetherspoon' flagship green pub, the Kettleby Cross in Melton Mowbray, three years after it opened.
Investigations are continuing after a fire broke out at the pub last week. Crews arrived at the Kettleby Cross, on Wilton Road, to find the first floor and roof on fire.
Firefighters had to pump water from the nearby River Eyre to put out the flames. Damage to the building was described as "extensive".
The Kettleby Cross opened in September 2007. The aim is to use 50% less energy than a similar-sized JDW pub.
Energy is generated from a wind turbine and saved through modern techniques, such as rainwater-harvesting, solar panels, sun pipes, photovoltaic tiles and evaporative coolers.
Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said at the time: "We want to take a lead in the pub world and think this will make us more attractive to customers, vis-à-vis our peer group."
