Twelve pubs in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire have agreed to use polycarbonate glasses in the evening as part of a drive to reduce violent crime.

Members of the Cleethorpes' Pubwatch clubbed together to invest in polycarbonates after regular meetings with police licensing officers and the council. It has helped contribute to a 50% decline in violent crime in the area.

Licensee of the Fiddler venue, Paul Money, said he hoped pubs and bars would continue to trial the plastic glasses at least until the end of the year.

"There has been a big slide down in violence since pubs in the area have started using all plastic," he said.

"There has been no complaints and customers still feel they are getting good quality.

"Although costs to start with, plastic lasts longer and we all clubbed together to buy in bulk and get a discount. The move has reduced the likelihood of insurance claims and not as many go to hospital, which is better for us and the NHS.

"Everyone is trying to get involved in using plastic."

Graham Frankion, joint manager of local club Amishi implements a permanent plastic policy with glasses and bottles. "We will always use plastic without a shadow of a doubt," he said. "It does cost more but it's durable. Deliveries are lighter, and there is no danger to the staff or customers.

"The worst thing that can happen is that someone will pinch one or two for a barbecue."

It comes as Britain's biggest nightclub operator Luminar leisure announced it is to ditch its use of polycarbonates and return to glass.
