Two Hollyoaks' stars are urging young people to drink more water and soft drinks on a night out, as part of the industry's £100m sensible drinking campaign 'Why Let Good Times Go Bad?'

Claire Cooper, who plays Jacqui McQueen, and Gemma Merna, who plays Carmel Valentine, nee McQueen, are fronting the second stage of the Drinkaware campaign, which kicked off this month. They are promoting the tagline 'Get watered, not slaughtered'.

It comes as new research shows two thirds of young adults are spending at least half a day recovering when they have a hangover.

On average, hangovers occur more than twice a month and one in 10 18-24 year olds waste an entire day suffering the ill effects of drinking too much the night before, the study showed.

However, one in 10 young adults already claims to drink water or a soft drink in between every alcoholic drink.

"We all like a good night out but it's never good to have that drink which tips you over the edge and ruins not only your night but the next day too. Believe me, I've learnt the hard way," said Merna.

Chris Sorek, Drinkaware's chief executive, said: "Drinking water or soft drinks on a night out is a simple thing to do but it can really help young adults stay in control of their drinking on a night out."

Drinkaware claims that more than 16,000 pubs and bars across the UK are displaying its campaign posters and beermats, as well as 7,000 supermarkets, convenience stores and off licences. The campaign logo will also feature on more than 13 million products.
