Pub chef in a monster trifle

Pub chef Jamie King, of the Anchor in Walton Manor, has created a giant 200kg trifle for TV show Monster Munchies.

A pub chef has created a giant 200kg trifle for TV show Monster Munchies.

Jamie King, chef/licensee of Wadworth pub the Anchor in Walton Manor, Oxfordshire, impressed visitors at the Oxford Foodies Festival with the trifle which included £500-worth of ingredients.

These included 100 litres each of custard and jelly for the 2.5m by 1m trifle. King enlisted a local builder to help put together a custom built perspex tray, so people could see the layers, and hired a punt to present in.

The Anchor battled it out with Oxford University's Exeter College Kitchen to make the biggest, tastiest, best-presented trifle for the Good Food channel's new series Monster Munchies, presented by Celebrity Masterchef winner Matt Dawson,

King said: "There was lots of drama, It took 12 hours to make and I was still adding custard and jelly on the way there."

King's masterpiece didn't win on size as the other trifle was so large it had to be delivered to the festival by a forklift truck, but won on taste and presentation.

"All of our trifle was eaten by festival-goers," said King. "People kept coming up for seconds and not a scrap was left. A few people who had tried it came into the pub afterwards off the back of it and we should get some good exposure when the programme goes out."
