Health minister Edwina Hart intends to ask for licensing powers to be devolved to Wales in a bid to address the nation's love affair with alcohol. A formal request for the transfer of powers could see Wales go it alone on alcohol pricing and licensing hours. An e-mail mistakenly sent to all AMs said: "The Welsh Assembly Government intends to make a formal approach to the UK government for the devolution for powers in relation to alcohol licensing." - Wales Online

Shoppers are paying up to 58 per cent more for basic grocery items than they were three years ago, according to figures published today. The price of tea has shot up by 30 per cent while the cost of staple foods such as bread and eggs have risen by 18 per cent since 2007. More than 100 children a week are contacting the ChildLine helpline with worries about their parents' drinking or drug use, according to the NSPCC.
