Pubs across the country are preparing for visits from MPs today as Proud of Pubs Week draws to a close.

Around 50 MPs from all corners of the country have vowed to visit a pub today to enjoy a drink and learn more about the benefits pubs bring to their communities.

Among those expected to take part are former pubs minister John Healey who is due to visit the George and Dragon in Wentworth, South Yorkshire.

Climate change secretary Chris Huhne and former Labour minister Vernon Coaker have also pledged to visit a pub as part of the week.

Meanwhile Yvonne Fovargue MP and Lisa Nandy MP were due to join Wigan CAMRA branch chairman Ken Worthington at the Caledonian Hotel, Bolton Road, Ashton in Makerfield.

And Andrew Turner MP is due to visit the Old Comical Pub on the Isle of Wight on Saturday.

Licensee Carl Scourfield welcomed the new Tory MP for Chester Stephen Mosley to his pub, the Pied Bull.

Others taking part include Burton MP Andrew Griffiths who will visit Punch Taverns pub the Blacksmiths Arms and Bristol North West MP Charlotte Leslie who is due to attend the Mill House.

Heidi Alexander, MP for Lewisham East, has already visited a pub in her constituency.

She said: "I'm really pleased to support the Proud of Pubs campaign - not least because it gave me an excuse for a rare night off! Good pubs are vitally important to community life in the UK and I wish The Publican all the best in its efforts to promote and support the trade."

Pubs throughout the country have been taking part in a range of activities to mark the week.
