Sky has promised to backdate reductions in its fees at pubs that successfully appeal their business rates.

The broadcaster will pay back the excess that has already been paid from the time when the rating appeal is approved, covering a maximum period of 12 months.

It is a significant move because it is estimated that between 2,000 and 3,000 pubs have appealed their rates after rateable values rose by an average of 23% in the new valuations, which have applied since April.

Meanwhile, the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has asked for a meeting to discuss Sky's pricing structure and its impact on pubs.

BBPA communications director Mark Hastings said the group will also "seek to identify opportunities for greater flexibility and a better deal for pubs and a way forward to achieve that."

Writing in the Morning Advertiser this week, Sky Business managing director Iain Holden said: "We'll keep reviewing and amending our pricing structures. This is only the start of a journey."

Sky has revealed that Sky Sports News will be broadcast in HD from 23 August.
