An online database that barstaff can use to search for beers, stockists and match brews to food has been launched by master brewer Alex Barlow.
The website accompanies Alex's beer experience pack that trains barstaff on beer flavour and includes the world's first 'scratch and sniff' hop card.
The beer experience pack comes with a beer tasting glass, which has a specially designed nucleated bottom aiding the rise of bubbles, and therefore aroma, to the top. This helps the flavour to break through. The pack also contains sachets of different malts and unmalted barley for tasting.
Alex describes himself as a "flavour expert" and is an international beer judge, with 27 years of industry experience. He said: "The intention for the pack and wesbite was to get knowledge across about beer to barstaff and licensees but it can also be used by consumers and is accessible to anyone interested in beer.
"A lot of bar staff don't get training in beer they get training in how to work the till and if they are lucky cellar management. But the people that are serving the beer very rarely get any training on this. The pack and website gives people a language so they can talk about beer and essentially make more sales - that's the bottom line. It's about helping the industry."
Barlow says the pack and website can help pubs broaden the range of beers they stock.
A donation will be made to the Save the Great British Pub campaign on each pack purchase. To order a beer experience pack visit www.allbeer.co.uk and to visit the new website go to www.allbeerfinder.com
