Gastropub operator the Meredith Group, the company headed by Barnaby Meredith, has opened its third pub after acquiring a new free-of-tie lease for the former Mason Arms in London from the Portman Estate.

The company opened its first pub in 2003 after taking over and redeveloping what became the House in Canonbury, north London. It also operates the Only Running Footman, just off Berkeley Square on Charles Street, Mayfair.

Hall & Woodhouse had previously operated the three-storey Victorian pub.

The new pub will be named the Portman after Sir William Portman who in 1532 acquired 270 acres of land, which his descendents later developed as the Portman Estate.

Davis Coffer Lyons (DCL) handled the disposal on behalf of the Portman Estate.
