Makers of a PASS card — used as ID in pubs — are offering their cards for free to any holder of a National ID Card.

It follows news that the National ID Card scheme is to be abolished within 100 days.

Citizencard is offering free cards worth £15 to 15,000 National ID holders. The Citizencards bear the Proof of Age Standards Scheme (PASS) hologram.

"Following the demise of the National Identity Card scheme CitizenCards and the PASS hologram will be of even greater benefit to UK residents of any age," said CitizenCard chief executive Andrew Chevis.

"We are delighted to offer holders of a National Identity Card the opportunity to obtain a free CitizenCard, and we look forward to discussing with the new Government further ways in which we can advance recognition and use of CitizenCards and the PASS hologram."

National ID card holders who would like a free CitizenCard should apply online at www.citizencard.com/ccappform.pdf. They are urged to use the Route 1 process and ignore the request for payment.

The offer is valid until 31 July.
