Sales of local beers got a significant boost thanks to a £40,000 investment in Cask Ale Week.

The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) said sales through its Direct Delivery Scheme (DDS) over the three weeks from March 22 to April 12 were up by 5.7 per cent.

Around 1,000 pubs which use the DDS were sent free point-of-sale kits.

Licensee Peter Whalley of the Woolpack Inn in Coggeshall, Essex, said: "Cask Ale Week went well for us, we doubled our usual cask ale volumes.

"We had around six beers from East Anglia on the bar and we used the pump clips and banners from the POS kit to communicate to customers. It was a good week."
