Birmingham City Council believes the number of pubs accredited by its Best Bar None scheme will leap by half this year.

The local authority hopes 150 pubs will be accredited on the scheme, which recognises responsible venues, before the end of 2010 - beating last year's 99.

Pubs also have the chance to win one of seven awards and there will also be a prize for the winner overall. Best Bar None CEO Neil Robertson said the scheme, "continues to help create safer, more prosperous areas up and down the country".

Birmingham's Best Bar None programme is sponsored by Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands and run by Birmingham City Council, in partnership with West Midlands Police and the West Midlands Fire Service.
