A new advertising campaign has launched today highlighting the risks of binge-drinking, with the help of comedian Bill Bailey.

The ad aims to raise awareness of how alcohol can make young people vulnerable to related problems including road traffic accidents, poor marks at school and unwanted pregnancies.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families' (DCSF) "why let drink decide?" campaign has been launched with the help of comedians Jo Brand, Josie Long and Russell Kane.

"This campaign is the start of offering clear and consistent advice for families, by building on the recent findings of the chief medical officer which were widely supported by parents and young people," said children's secretary Ed Balls.

"We want to encourage families to have open and frank discussions about the risks associated with drinking earlier, and to support this by giving parents the advice and information they have asked for."

Chief executive of alcohol awareness charity Chris Sorek said: "We could all do with a gentle reminder from time to time to re-evaluate the role alcohol plays in our everyday lives.

"Most people think the amount they drink is OK but only two large glasses of wine or a couple of pints a day could put you at risk.

"Rather than waiting for a scare to take stock of drinking habits, people can make some small changes to avoid serious health conditions."
