Gordon Ramsay pub loses Michelin award
Gordon Ramsay's pub the Narrow in Limehouse, London, has lost its Michelin Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide to Great Britain & Ireland 2010.
The Bib Gourmand is awarded to restaurants offering "good food at moderate prices" at £28 or less for three courses, excluding drinks (€40 in Ireland).
Ramsay's restaurant Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's also lost its Michelin star. But Ramsay's restaurant in Chelsea, West London, retains its three stars in the new guide.
The Narrow is one of three Ramsay pubs and opened in March 2007.
The pubs were overseen by Mark Sargeant, who collaborated with Ramsay on cook-book Gordon Ramsay's Great British Pub Food.
Sargeant left Gordon Ramsay Holdings (GRH) in December to be creative director of pub group, the Swan Collection, owners of the Swan in West Malling, Kent and the Swan at The Globe.
The Angel in Hetton, North Yorkshire, one of the original gastropubs which was pioneered by the late Denis Watkins, was one of seven pubs who lost their Bib Gourmand in this year's guide.
Other pubs losing the accolade are the Mistley Thorn, Mistley, Essex; the White Bull, Ribchester, Lancashire; the Three Horseshoes Inn, Stokenchurch, Buckinghamshire and the Bruce Arms in West Tanfield, North Yorkshire.
New awards
There are 28 new Bib Gourmands in this year's guide, bringing the total number of Bib Gourmands to 131, five less than the record number of 136 in the 2009 Guide.
There were eight new Bib Gourmands for pubs.
These are Paul Ripley's St Kew Inn, Wadebridge, Cornwall which is a St Austell brewery tenancy; Stephen Bull's Butchers Arms in Woolhope, Herefordshire; the Bee in Windlesham, Surrey and the Drapers Arms in Islington, London.
The Drapers Arms is owned by Ben Maschler, son of restaurant critic Fay Maschler who was previously head of food at Geronimo Inns.
Other pubs winning the award are the Pony and Trap, Chew Magna, Somerset; the Red Lion in East Chisenbury, Wiltshire; the George & Dragon and the Bay Horse in Hurworth-on-tees, Durham.
A rising star award has been awarded to the Black Swan in Oldstead, North Yorkshire. Michelin launched the rising stars, which identify restaurants that are in line for a first, second or third Michelin star in the future, five years ago.
Three pubs were awarded the prestigious Michelin star: the Royal Oak, Paley Street, Berkshire; the Harwood Arms, Fulham, London and the Pipe & Glass, East Beverly, Yorkshire. There are now 10 pubs with Michelin stars.
