Cornwall-based Healey's Cyder Farm has plans to launch an expansion across the rest of the UK in 2010.

The company's Cornish Rattler Cyder (6% abv) is already popular in the south-west, holding a franchise consisting of 800 pubs including freehouses and St Austell-owned venues, off-licences and major retailers such as Tesco and Sainsbury's.

The premium cider has grown by 70% year-on-year with retail bottle sales at 1.5 million last year. It is also sold on draught at 800 pubs across the UK at £3.20 to £3.50 per pint.

Healey's introduced Pear Rattler Cyder in 2008, which has reached sales of 500,000 bottles. It is slightly sweeter than the original and has a lower alcohol level at 4% abv.

In the expansion, Healey's hopes to introduce its bottled cider to pubs, as well as increasing draught sales. A spokesman said: "Healey's will be in discussion with a number of operators soon".

"We are planning to extend our franchise further across the UK next year and these new initiatives are a crucial part of the brand armoury," said founder and managing director David Healey.

"We specifically target the 25-years-plus audience, who appreciate and are prepared to pay more for the taste and also buy into the Cornish provenance, quirky style and heritage of the brand, including our 'just chill' strap line."

The company was recently forced to revise the label for its cyder after the original was found to be in breach of the Portman Group Code for having underage appeal. The new label still features the original cartoon snake, but with "much reduced prominance".
