A "green guru" has issued tips to licensees on making changes to their property to save money.
It follows news that the Carbon Trust is offering £100m in loans to help pubs slash energy costs. Will Fellows, loans channel manager at the Trust, said focusing on lighting, heating and air-conditioning systems were "easy wins" for hosts.
Fellows said: "Changing from 30-50 watt bulbs to using LED lighting is becoming more widespread in the hospitality sector. It adds ambience and can save as much as 80% on energy bills.
"On average, businesses save £12,000 by replacing old heating systems with more energy efficient ones.
"Small air-conditioning systems provide another opportunity for energy savings, particularly as they often fall within the lower range of loans on offer — our minimum is now £3,000.
"Some gases used as refrigerants are being phased out for less harmful ones, so it's worth getting in touch to see what's available."
He also advised talking to equipment suppliers who can help with loan applications — over 70% are made via this route.
"Since the loan is repaid by the energy savings generated, it's basically a free piece of equipment," said Fellows.
The hospitality sector has already obtained £6.5m of the funding available this year — which equates to £2.6m of savings. The average saving for a small business is £9,000.
Applications are made at www.carbontrust.co.uk, and if accompanied by a supplier's quote, decisions can often be made in 10 working days. Visit the website for details.
