Doncaster Brewery back in business

Thorne Brewery in Doncaster has brewed its first pint since 1986 — all profits will be reinvested back into the local community

Thorne Brewery in Doncaster, Yorkshire has brewed its first pint since 1986.

The brewery has been re-opened by former Abbeydale brewer Mike Richards under the banner of a social enterprise and Community Interest Company — meaning all profits are reinvested back into the local community tp help improve the area.

The first beers produced are Thorne Best Bitter and Thorne Pale Ale.

Its flagship Thorne Best Bitter is described as having "caramel, chocolate and fruitcake flavours" with the hops giving a "full bodied bitterness and notes of orange peel, pepper and herbal aromas".

Thorne Pale Ale is described as a "refreshing brew with a fruity, herby flavour and a resinous, grassy aroma. Well balanced bitterness gives a clean finish".

"The Thorne Brewery Community Interest Company has worked hard to secure the funding needed to start up the business, and can now proudly say brewing is coming back to Thorne," said chief executive Mark Burton.

"Thanks to the generous backing and understanding of our funders, we are now in the start up phase. This is fantastic news for Thorne and for Real Ale lovers nationwide.

"Our aims are to create employment and training opportunities for local people, and to open a visitor's centre."
