A barmaid battling breast cancer joined 15 others in a charity head shave at her place of work to help raise £1,000 for Breast Cancer Care.

Keely Smith, originally from Canada, works at The Harrier in Bishops Rise in Hatfield, Berkshire.

She said she had been overwhelmed by the support of the pub staff and punters, given she has only lived in the UK for 10 months.

"I was diagnosed in January and since then everybody at work has been so fantastic. The local community has also been really great. It was awesome to see how many people came to support us on Friday."

She added she was grateful for the backing of her boss who gave his staff the go ahead for holding the event in the pub.

"My manager Paul Warwick told us to go for it and let us take complete charge of organising it. He was behind us 100 per cent and it was all really well executed."

Her fellow barmaid Paula Bevan, who has fought cancer twice provided vital support in helping Keely.

"She has helped me out since the beginning. And whenever I have gone for chemotherapy, I have stayed with her."

But she said she drew the line at letting Paula join her in getting her head shaved.

"I would not let her take part because she has done it once already and that is enough."

After last week's event, Keely said she was feeling positive about the future.

"I feel fine. I have been doing chemotherapy and the cancer has shrunk by half now so I am fairly optimistic."
