Pubs across the country will be encouraging customers to raise a glass next weekend in an attempt to break a world record.

Around half a million people are expected to take part in the world's biggest toast on Saturday April 11 as Cask Ale Week celebrations draw to a close.

Brewers, licensees and pub companies are also gearing up for a host of events that kick-off on Monday.

Ember Inns has teamed up with Batemans Brewery in Lincolnshire to give a customer a once in a lifetime chance to create a beer to be sold in the chain's 170 pubs.

To win the prize customers will try to guess how many pints of ale Ember Inns will sell in all its pubs during the week.

The winner will get to create and name the beer and see it sold across the Ember Inns estate.

Oliver Devine, senior marketing manager for Ember Inns, said: "We wanted to develop an initiative which will get our guests as excited about cask ale as we are and are confident this fantastic prize will create a real buzz."

Meanwhile, Fuller's is among a host of brewers that will be running a range of initiatives during the week including offering a free pint to guests at its hotels and offering a number of free brewery tours.

And the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham, North Yorkshire, is lending its support to the event by providing promotional packs for 450 pubs.

Paul Theakston, Black Sheep managing director, said: "Cask Ale Week is a great opportunity to promote real ale and support publicans across the country."

The week of events is organised by Cask Marque with the support of the Campaign for Real Ale, major brewers and pub companies.
