"A mother has resorted to putting up posters warning people not to give alcohol to her 16-year-old daughter in a desperate attempt to stop her drinking herself to death. Isobel Higgins, 33, has tried reasoning with the teenager, grounding her and has even called in social services, but nothing has succeeded in halting her slide into alcoholism. Now, out of desperation, she is plastering the home-made posters around her home city of Carlisle. The posters contain a photo of Jody below the warning 'do not serve or buy alcohol for this girl.'" - Daily Mail

"Guinness is claiming an industry first with plans to put the number of units of alcohol on the side of a pint glass. The 500,000 new glasses that will be issued to pubs and bars will also mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the St James's Gate Brewery in Dublin by Arthur Guinness. Diageo, the owner of Guinness, said it hoped that the move would help drinkers to stay within the Government's recommended guidelines on alcohol consumption." - The Times

"JD Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin has dismissed charges that cheap prices in his pubs encourage alcoholism among the young, though it's interesting to note Wetherspoons is now raising its 99p offer to £1.49 in certain cities. Martin is adamant. 'The government has made a big mistake, or a cynically deliberate one, concentrating its fire on the pubs for binge drinking. It's the massive increase in consumption outside pubs that's the problem,' he says." - Sunday Times

"In County Durham, a loyal band of pub-goers have so far managed to save two pubs. The Bridge Inn, in Middleton-in-Teesdale, was on the verge of closing its doors for the last time but then a group of villagers formulated a plan, creating a non-profitable trust and taking over their favourite meeting place. It proved so successful that the trust recently reopened the Grey Bull in Stanhope, which had been shut for six months because the brewery had failed to find a tenant. The scheme has won the backing of the Campaign for Real Ale, which expects to see it copied across the country." - Sunday Express
