Cobra Beer saw its volumes increase by 28% for the three months to 31 January on last year.

Volumes for the six months to 31 January are up 21%. The rise is impressive when aagains an overall beer market volumes, which fell 8.3% from October to December and 5.5% for the year as a whole.

The increase in sales volumes was chiefly driven by the take-home sector with year-on-year sales up 63% for the half year.

"People often ask us how Cobra is growing so well against a back drop of a declining beer market," said founder and chairman Karan Bilimoria. "The answer is very simple — this is a result of Cobra's chief executive Adrian McKeon, who having started in Aug 2007, spent six months putting together a strengthened team, new brand positioning and a strategy that is delivering month after month."

McKeon added: "These results in the toughest of environments demonstrate the amazing potential of this brand that was created under 20 years ago and competes successfully with the giant brands of our industry, some of which are centuries old.

"Cobra now has high recognition, strong consumer loyalty, broad distribution and sustainable momentum."

Cobra plans to launch two new products next month.
