JD Wetherspoon slashes price of Greene King IPA
JD Wetherspoon is slashing the price of Greene King IPA to 99p a pint "indefinitely" from next Monday (5 January).
The company is also selling five meals for £2.99 each.
Chief executive John Hutson said: "In the past we've had a January sale. This year, we're not doing a January sale, just a new 'table talker'.
"It will run until it's time to change the table talker - we normally change the table talker three or four times a year.
"It's a good offer but, at the end of the day, it doesn't cover a huge range of products."
Asked whether JD Wetherspoon wil make any profit selling IPA at 99p a pint, he said: "There's some profit but it's a very good deal for customers.
"We didn't speak to Greene King about it (beforehand). There's no (price) support from Greene King. We're a very big customer of theirs and we're very supportive of other products of theirs".
Hutson addded: "People enjoy going to the pub, however, I appreciate that the economic downturn means that they now have to be more careful with their money.
"I believe that my new food and drink prices will allow people to visit the pub without it costing them too much.
"Unlike most sales that start in January, the offers will not be ending within days and will run indefinitely."
Other drinks offer across the 713-strong estate are: a bottle of San Miguel for 99p, a bottle of Blossom Hill Rose for £4.99, a single measure of Sailor Jerry rum (and a mixer) for £1.29 and a bottle of Jacques cider (750ml) for £3.99.
The five meals available at £2.99 are; cottage pie, chips and peas (made with British beef), ham, eggs and chips (Wiltshire ham, served with two fried free-range eggs), sausages, baked beans and chips (award-winning Lincolnshire sausages), spicy tomato pasta, as well as jacket potato and tuna mayonaise with a salad.
Wetherspoon pubs at airports, in central London and where licensing conditions apply may see slightly higher prices.
Meanwhile, Hutson said trading on New Year's Eve was "a mixed bag".
"A lot of customers go to private parties and trading was not a lot different to last year. The house party is much bigger than it was was - well done, Tesco."
